Travelstart has been named Africa’s Leading Online Travel Agency 2026 at the World Travel Awards, marking a major milestone for the South African travel brand as it celebrates 20 years of operations in the country.

The Cape Town-headquartered online travel company received the award at the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony 2026, held at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on 28 August.

The World Travel Awards confirmed Travelstart as the winner of the Africa’s Leading Online Travel Agency 2026 category.

The recognition comes as digital platforms play an increasingly important role in how African consumers search for flights, accommodation and other travel services. The shift towards online booking is also creating new opportunities — and new challenges — for the continent’s tourism industry.

As digital travel platforms become more widely used across Africa, customer trust, payment security, ease of booking and access to reliable support are becoming increasingly important competitive factors.

Twenty years of Travelstart in South Africa

Travelstart has developed into one of Africa’s most recognisable online travel brands, allowing consumers to search, compare and book flights, accommodation, car hire, holiday packages and other travel services through digital channels.

The company says its development over the past two decades has been shaped by changing traveller expectations, advances in online technology and growing consumer demand for simpler ways to research and book travel.

Wouter Nel, Head of Sales: Offline B2C at Travelstart, said the World Travel Awards recognition reflected the importance of maintaining customer trust as the online travel market develops.

“Winning this award is a proud moment for our team, but what matters most is the trust behind it. Travellers want a platform that is easy to use, great value and real support when they need it.”

Nel said the company intends to continue expanding that experience to more customers across African markets.

Travel technology continues to reshape African tourism

The development of online travel agencies is part of a broader digital transformation taking place across Africa’s tourism and hospitality industries.

Consumers increasingly expect to compare prices, book travel and manage trips digitally, while airlines, hotels and other travel providers are investing in technology that allows their products to reach customers through multiple online channels.

This trend is occurring alongside wider efforts to improve Africa’s tourism competitiveness. The continent still faces challenges including fragmented air connectivity, uneven digital infrastructure and significant differences between individual tourism markets.

AfricaBusiness has previously examined how greater differentiation and connectivity could help African destinations compete more effectively for international travellers.

From online booking platform to digital travel ecosystem

Travelstart’s business has evolved alongside these changes. What began as an online booking proposition has expanded into a broader travel platform connecting travellers with airlines, accommodation providers and other industry partners.

Andy Hedley, CEO of Travelstart, said the company’s core objective remains making travel easier and more accessible.

“This award is a reflection of the people who have built Travelstart, the partners who have grown with us, and the millions of travellers who have trusted us along the way.”

Hedley said the travel industry has changed significantly during the company’s time in the South African market, requiring Travelstart to adapt its technology and business model as consumer behaviour evolved.

Rather than treating its 20-year milestone as an endpoint, the company says it intends to continue developing its platforms and improving the way consumers access travel services.

Personalisation and platform integration

Travelstart says its next phase of development will include further investment in technology designed to make the booking process faster, simpler and more personalised.

The company is also focusing on tools that allow business partners to integrate travel products and services into their own digital platforms.

Mikha’il Ernest, Chief Commercial Officer at Travelstart, said this area represents one of the company’s key growth opportunities.

“Our ambition is to continue making travel easier, whether that’s helping a customer book their next holiday in minutes or enabling partners to seamlessly integrate travel into their own platforms.”

The combination of consumer-facing travel platforms and business-to-business technology could become increasingly important as Africa’s digital economy grows and tourism businesses look for more efficient ways to distribute flights, accommodation and travel experiences.

A milestone for an African travel brand

Travelstart’s World Travel Awards recognition comes at a time when African tourism businesses are competing not only on destination and price, but increasingly on technology, convenience and the quality of the digital customer experience.

For Travelstart, the 2026 award represents both recognition of its position in the online travel market and a test of whether it can maintain that position as competition, consumer expectations and travel technology continue to evolve.
