South Africa’s healthcare sector is entering a new phase of digital transformation as technology reshapes how healthcare services are delivered, managed and accessed.

South Africa has recognised digital transformation as an important part of healthcare development. The country’s National Digital Health Strategy South Africa 2019–2024 provides a framework for improving health information systems, strengthening digital platforms and increasing the use of health data to support better healthcare decisions. The strategy aims to create a more connected healthcare environment where digital technologies can improve patient management, healthcare planning and service delivery.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital adoption across healthcare systems worldwide. Healthcare providers increasingly relied on remote consultations, digital communication and technology-enabled solutions as traditional healthcare models faced unprecedented pressure.

However, the pandemic also exposed gaps in digital readiness. While technology adoption increased, unequal access to connectivity, devices and digital skills remained significant barriers.

“South Africa has made good progress, but implementation remains the biggest challenge. Digital healthcare is not only about introducing technology — it is about ensuring healthcare professionals can use it, patients can access it and infrastructure supports it,” says Mehnaaz Olla, School Manager of the MANCOSA School of Healthcare.

Digital access remains a key challenge

One of the biggest obstacles to digital healthcare expansion is the digital divide.

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), billions of people worldwide remain offline, with connectivity challenges continuing to affect low- and middle-income countries. Limited internet availability, affordability issues and infrastructure constraints continue to influence access to digital services. [3]

For healthcare systems, these challenges have direct consequences. Telemedicine and digital health platforms can help reach patients in remote areas, but only when communities have reliable connectivity and the ability to use these services.

In South Africa, improving digital inclusion will be essential to ensuring that healthcare innovation benefits both urban and rural populations.

“If we talk about digital healthcare without addressing digital poverty, we risk creating systems where technology improves access for some while leaving others behind,” says Olla.

The success of digital healthcare will therefore depend not only on technological investment but also on broader efforts to improve digital infrastructure and digital literacy.

Developing a future-ready healthcare workforce

Digital transformation requires skilled healthcare professionals who understand how to work with new technologies.

Healthcare workers increasingly need knowledge of electronic medical records, telehealth platforms, healthcare data management and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“Digital competence is becoming as important as clinical competence. Healthcare graduates entering the workforce will need to understand the technologies they use every day,” says Olla.

Education and training institutions are expected to play an important role in preparing future healthcare professionals for a technology-driven environment.

As healthcare systems become more data-focused, professionals who combine clinical expertise with digital skills are likely to become increasingly valuable across the healthcare sector.

HealthTech opportunities and investment potential

Digital healthcare is also becoming a growing area of innovation and investment across Africa.

The combination of rising healthcare demand, expanding technology adoption and the need for more efficient healthcare delivery is creating opportunities for companies developing solutions in areas such as:

  • telemedicine platforms;
  • healthcare data management;
  • AI-supported diagnostics;
  • patient monitoring systems;
  • digital healthcare administration.

The World Bank identifies digital infrastructure and technology adoption as important drivers of economic development, productivity and access to essential services. [4]

South Africa’s established technology ecosystem, research capabilities and healthcare infrastructure provide a foundation for further HealthTech growth.

For businesses and investors, digital healthcare represents a sector where innovation can address major social challenges while creating new commercial opportunities.

Artificial intelligence and the future of healthcare

Artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly important role in healthcare transformation.

AI applications are being explored in areas such as medical imaging, clinical decision support, healthcare administration and research.

However, responsible implementation remains critical. The WHO has highlighted the importance of ethics, transparency, accountability and patient protection when introducing artificial intelligence into healthcare systems. [5]

For African healthcare systems, AI could help improve efficiency and support healthcare professionals, particularly in areas facing shortages of specialised medical resources.

At the same time, technology should complement healthcare workers rather than replace the human interaction that remains central to patient care.

South Africa’s digital healthcare transformation has gained momentum, but the next stage will depend on effective implementation.

Progress will require continued investment in infrastructure, stronger digital skills development and cooperation between government, healthcare providers, technology companies and education institutions.

The success of digital healthcare should ultimately be measured not by the number of technologies introduced, but by whether these solutions improve patient outcomes, reduce barriers to care and create a more efficient healthcare system.

For South Africa and the wider African continent, digital healthcare represents more than a technological upgrade. It is an opportunity to build stronger, more inclusive and more innovative healthcare economies.
