A recent study by software development experts at Vention analyzed 43,392 job postings on Glassdoor across the U.S. to uncover the most in-demand skills for artificial intelligence (AI) professionals. By examining 425 AI-related skills, the study identified the ten most frequently requested competencies in AI job descriptions.
Key Findings
1. Machine Learning
Leading the list, machine learning is mentioned in 37.17% of AI job postings, equivalent to 16,130 listings. This subset of AI focuses on enabling computers to learn from data and improve performance without explicit programming, using patterns to make decisions or predictions.
2. Python
Python ranks second, appearing in 25.98% of job descriptions (11,275 postings). Its simplicity and robust libraries like TensorFlow and PyTorch make it a cornerstone of AI development, enabling tasks such as machine learning and data analysis.
3. Data Science
Data science is the third most sought-after skill, cited in 19.71% of listings (8,551 postings). AI roles leverage data science to analyze and interpret large datasets, providing insights for developing AI systems.
4. C++
With 19.02% of postings (8,254 jobs) listing it as a requirement, C++ is valued for its high performance and efficient memory management, essential in applications like robotics and computer vision.
5. Microsoft Excel
Excel ranks fifth, appearing in 17.61% of job postings (7,642 listings). It is used for organizing datasets, performing basic statistical analysis, and visualizing data.
Rounding Out the Top Ten
6. SQL – Requested in 15.72% of postings (6,820 jobs), SQL is crucial for managing and querying structured databases.
7. Java – Mentioned in 10.77% of listings (4,675 jobs), Java’s portability and scalability make it ideal for enterprise AI applications.
8. Data Analytics – Found in 9.84% of job descriptions (4,271 postings), data analytics supports decision-making and model development.
9. DevOps – Highlighted in 8.84% of job postings (3,838 listings), DevOps streamlines AI application deployment and management.
10. CI/CD – Cited in 7.13% of listings (3,094 jobs), CI/CD facilitates seamless integration and deployment of AI models.
