The pandemic led not only to a health crisis but also an economic crisis. The measures imposed by the Ministry of health, such as physical distancing and cessation of movements, contributed to the increasing role of platform livelihoods. Those in logistics were considered as essential delivery agents and service providers. The small and medium enterprises switched to online shopping. How G4S became the largest courier company in Kenya

G4S is widely recognised as the world’s largest security company, but in Kenya its reputation for courier and logistics services is built on 50 years of experience delivering when it matters most. A clear market leader for courier services, G4S Kenya is leaving the more internationally well-known courier brands in its wake. Jackson Miano, Head of Sales for Secure Logistics in Kenya, tells us how... Courier and logistics might not be the most obvious service for a security company, but in many ways it was a natural evolution for us. Our customers wanted a secure and reliable delivery service, and who better to provide that than the world’s largest security company. Why a Plastics Pact is recipe for better environmental management practices

The year is 2016, outside a busy supermarket in one of Nairobi’s estates. Shoppers flow in and out carrying their groceries and other shopping items with plastic carrier bags. These are the order of the day, but their pollution to the environment is devastating. A year later in 2017, the Kenyan government would enact the ban on production, sale and use of plastics carrier bags. The ban is considered one of the sternest in the world and whose success rate is now recorded at approximately 80%. Fast forward to 2021, we have made tremendous strides in the fight against plastic pollution as a nation, with a ban on specific single use plastics in all protected areas taking effect from June 2020. There are also ongoing and ambitious plastics initiatives in the country, such as the Kenya Plastic A...

Its operations are vast, with two mega plants located in Mombasa and Athi River that run 24/7. Each plant fills 300 trucks with cement on an average day, creating a formidable logistical operation. Anyone who has used cement to mix concrete knows the importance of having the correct ratio of water, cement and sand. Too much water and you’re left with an unmanageable mess… too much sand and it grinds to a halt. Providing security at these vast sites presents a similar challenge - too much interference an...

Deal making slows across Africa but post-pandemic opportunities look interesting

Deal making activity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) dropped in the second half of 2020 (H2 2020), when compared to the second half of 2019 (H2 2019) and year-on-year, deals were also down in both volume and value compared to 2019. As the continent gears up for post-pandemic recovery in 2021, the opportunities presented by free trade across the continent, foreign investment opportunities due to new partnerships and trade relationships, as well as the post-pandemic focus on technology, healthcare and renewable energy, will be key factors in attracting valuable mergers and acquisition (M&A) activity to the region. Further, South Africa’s deal volume and value both dropped in 2020, with the industrials and healthcare sector attracting the biggest investments. Ghana stood out as a country that...
