How innovation in technology is outsmarting crime in South Africa

Crime is growing more sophisticated – so too are the solutions to combat it In the current climate of hijackings, robberies and unlawful syndicates, it is hard to imagine a world where crime is drastically reduced, or even wiped out completely. However, according to Warren Myers, CEO of South Africa’s on-demand security and medical response platform AURA, this is entirely within our reach. In the third of a series of monthly webinars discussing and finding solutions to the crime situation in South Africa, Myers was joined by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee and Kagiso Khaole, Head of Mobility Operations at Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, to talk about how new, innovative technology is being used to outsmart criminals. “As criminals become smarter, and rates of murder, attempted murder, kidna...

NFTs to revolutionise the way creatives can create an income in the digital world

Non-fungible tokens – or NFTs – could help South African creatives better control the rights to their intellectual property, give them access to a broader market and improve their earnings. This is according to John Singh, non-executive director of the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) and chair of the IITPSA Blockchain Special Interest Group. Singh explains that NFTs use cryptocurrency blockchains to log and authenticate ownership of digital content ranging from music and videos to art and photographs. “NFTs are revolutionising the way people do business and exchange goods and value,” he says. “NFTs may be very hyped and sometimes hard to get your head around right now, but at ground level, it’s a normal social concept where communities create valu...

Which digital content expert is right for your company?

By Tessa-Kate Davel, UX Writer, Strider Building a digital team continues to be a challenge for most companies, which remain mired in a traditional analogue mindset. Job titles including terms like ‘User Experience’ or ‘Conversation Designer’ are largely foreign to sales, marketing and, indeed, HR teams – with more conventional titles. But the world is changing, jobs are evolving – and the needs and the titles of those which go along with them, need to shift too. Content experts are hot property for companies looking to move effectively into the digital space, but not many understand what kind of expert they need to meet their specific needs. There’s plenty of confusion, specifically around a UX Writer, a Digital Copywriter and a Conversation Designer. So, let’s unpack them… A UX (User ...

Smart Cities: The Solution to Africa’s Upward Urbanisation Trend

Technical Leapfrogging could Position African Cities for Sustainable, Smart Growth Africa’s urban population is booming. At 3.5% per year[1], the continent’s urban growth rate is the highest in the developing world over the last twenty years. Within the next twenty, research suggests that every second person in Africa will live in a town or a city, bringing the urban population to around 926 million people.[2]. Within the decade, it is also predicted that six of the world’s 41 megacities (cities with a population of over 10 million people), will be on African soil, including Cairo, Lagos and Kinshasa, soon to be joined by Johannesburg, Luanda and Dar es Salaam1 . From criminal enterprise to big business: The evolution of ransomware reaches new, dangerous levels of sophistication

Once a niche criminal enterprise, ransomware has become big business, complete with R&D departments and sales and marketing divisions. The deeply layered onion that is today’s ransomware attack landscape has been wreaking havoc in large enterprises in South Africa and across the globe. Patrick Evans, CEO of SLVA Cybersecurity, says it only takes two hours to determine whether a network’s endpoint protection can be circumvented and if the organisation has controls in place to stop the encryption and ransomware behaviour: “Understanding an organisation’s current environment, and the likely costs of a ransomware attack, is crucial to making a more informed decision concerning security.” Evans says the recent ransomware attack on TransUnion has undoubtedly raised concerns among enterpr...

Why the cloud numbers don’t add up

Cloud is a hot topic, with seemingly everyone making the change to cloud. But the numbers don’t add up. What’s happening behind the scenes? In a recent survey by large-scale tech learning platform O’Reilly, 90% of respondents said their organisations are using cloud, and 30% said they’re fully cloud native. This makes it clear why ‘cloud’ is the buzzword on every IT leader’s lips. Seemingly, if you’re not getting on the cloud, you’re getting left behind. But other insights reveal that the numbers just don’t add up. Cloud spend still accounts for just 6% of total IT spend, according to tech analyst IDC. And, while global cloud spend surged in the first quarter of 2021, the numbers dipped by 1.9% in Q2 – the first decline after seven quarters of spending growth since 2019. The reasons ID...
