The future of work

With new technology such as AI support and smart cameras, the workplace of the future can be anywhere In what felt like the blink of an eye, the work landscape was transformed as the pandemic spread across the world in 2020. Entire workforces went mobile, seemingly overnight, while organisations bolstered existing remote working processes. And when the world emerges on the other side of this life-altering event, it won’t revert to the way things were before. By some estimates, 70 percent of the workforce will work remotely at least five days a month by 2025. Even in South Africa, where face-to-face meetings, office models and in-person communication has long been the standard, a hybrid model – a combination of remote and on-site working – will likely be the answer in the future, s...

AI will reduce SA’s crime stats as early as 2023

Applying artificial intelligence to big data can predict – and prevent - crime. By Warren Myers, CEO and co-founder of security and medical response marketplace AURA When a social media site throws out an ad for a product you were just discussing over the phone, it’s easy to jump to conclusions: They must be listening, surely. But the truth is that the site employed artificial intelligence (AI) to predict your behaviour. You searched for a yeast starter last week and commented on a friend’s photo of sourdough bread yesterday. The ad for a bread-making course that seemingly pops up out of the blue was shown to you because the data predicted you might be interested in it – based on your own and previous users’ behaviour. Those same principles can be applied to fight crime – and s...

The livelihoods of smallholder farmers rely on resilient farming systems and this requires good soil management and the correct use of fertility inputs. This change can only be achieved with accurate field level soil information, derived from soil testing. Soil testing services have been out of financial reach for smallholder farmers, which is reflected in the fact that poor soil fertility remains a key driver of yield lo...
