Accra, Monday 20, 2017 — The Ecosystem Based Adaption for Food Security Assembly (EBAFOSA; www.ebafosa.org), established under the auspices of the United Nations Environmental Programme will join the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Ministry for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation to launch the all-inclusive pan-African framework on food security in Ghana on the 3RD of March, 2017 at the University of Ghana (ISSER Auditorium) from 8:30 to 12:30 pm. The event is expected to bring together key stakeholders in all areas– public and private sectors, educational and research institutions, individuals publics/citizens, community based organizations, international intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, civil society groups, etc. to collaborate in developing and implementing policy solutions to upscale Ecosystem Based Adaptation – driven agriculture and its value chain improvements toward ensuring sustainable inclusive growth in Ghana.

Civil society organisations from the SADC region, and around the world have condemned the SADC draft Protocol for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (Plant Breeders’ Rights) as spelling disaster for small farmers and food security in the region. These groups, representing millions of farmers in Africa and around the world have submitted their concerns to the SADC Secretariat. They are calling for the rejection of the Protocol and urgent consultations with farmers, farmer movements and civil society before it’s too late.
Madagascar needs more than $41 million to end locust plague / Half of the country infested by locusts – food production seriously at risk
ROME, Italy, March 26, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ – Madagascar needs more than $22 million of emergency funding by June to start fighting a severe locust plague that threatens the country’s next cropping seasons and the food security of more than half the country’s population, FAO said today. The agency underlined, however, that a three-year strategy is needed – requiring an additional $19 million.

The Southern Africa Trade Hub (SATH) is planning to partner with organizations in need of technical assistance along the groundnut value chain to minimize risk of aflatoxin contamination, according to a SATH spokesperson.
According to SATH, groundnuts are one of Southern Africa’s most important crops, but contamination by the carcinogenic fungus aflatoxin has become a public health issue and a significant barrier to trade. Risks associated with the fungus include liver cancer, impaired growth for children under five and suppression of the immune system.
