Harper Government boosts food production and economic growth in Africa / Parliamentary Secretary Pierre Lemieux highlights Earth Day

OTTAWA, Canada, April 22, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ African households will be better able to increase their food production and incomes as they improve their ability to adapt to the impacts of deforestation and the effects of weather on food security and livelihoods. Today, in recognition of Earth Day, Pierre Lemieux, MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, announced an agro-forestry initiative that will improve food production, reduce poverty and help African families adapt to weather-related challenges in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

NEW SEED LEGISLATION SPELLS DISASTER FOR SMALL FARMERS IN AFRICA

Civil society organisations from the SADC region, and around the world have condemned the SADC draft Protocol for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (Plant Breeders’ Rights) as spelling disaster for small farmers and food security in the region. These groups, representing millions of farmers in Africa and around the world have submitted their concerns to the SADC Secretariat. They are calling for the rejection of the Protocol and urgent consultations with farmers, farmer movements and civil society before it’s too late. read more

Madagascar needs more than $41 million to end locust plague / Half of the country infested by locusts – food production seriously at risk

ROME, Italy, March 26, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ Madagascar needs more than $22 million of emergency funding by June to start fighting a severe locust plague that threatens the country’s next cropping seasons and the food security of more than half the country’s population, FAO said today. The agency underlined, however, that a three-year strategy is needed – requiring an additional $19 million. read more

Commissioner Piebalgs to launch new food security and energy projects during his visit to Burundi

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, February 20, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ During a two-day visit to Burundi (21-22/02), EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs will announce an €18 million new project on food security for the benefit of around 20,000 households and to treat 80,000 undernourished children in the country. World Cocoa Foundation and TCHO Partner to Boost Flavor and Value of Ghana’s Cocoa Crop

WASHINGTON /PRNewswire/ — The World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) and chocolate maker TCHO are collaborating to introduce innovations and quality improvements to cocoa grown in Ghana.
