Cybersecurity budgets: The delicate balance of spending money to save money

Allocating sufficient budget to cyber threats can be a complex issue that requires the cooperation and coordination of all executives within an organisation. When a company’s financial and reputational welfare is at stake, it pays to effectively calculate the priority such risks should be awarded during budgeting, says Ryan Mer CEO at eftsure Africa, a Know Your Payee™ (KYP) platform provider. For CFOs, it’s not a question of whether a cybersecurity budget should be in place, but rather how much is enough. The bigger the potential gain, the bolder cyber attackers become at finding creative ways to intercept payments or hack into company systems. Business email compromise (BEC) remains one of the most significant threats, intercepting invoices from suppliers and diverting payments by creat...

Connecting people and spaces through technology: smart collaboration drives productivity in an evolving workplace

By Warren Miller, Solutions Architect at Altron Managed Solutions As everyone knows, the business world is going through an accelerated evolution, where technology is being implemented to drive efficiencies across businesses. This is also true for communication and collaboration tools and platforms. While many tools most certainly are customer-facing, technology has come a long way in enabling better collaboration, inclusiveness and productivity among employees - which ultimately affects the bottom line. There is definitely a noticeable trend across industries that unified communication and collaboration strategies are converging, where businesses are looking at paying for a single licence across everything, as opposed to paying for a host of licences across different platforms or techno...

SoftwareOne study finds that 83% of CIOs must do more with less in 2023

SoftwareOne, a leading global software and cloud solutions provider, recently unveiled the findings of CIO Pulse: 2023 budgets & priorities. The study, which recently surveyed 600 C-suite and IT decision-makers in the UK and USA examines how the current global economy is impacting IT priorities, revealing that despite 93% of CIOs expecting IT budgets to increase in 2023, 83% say they are under pressure to make their budgets stretch further than ever before – with a key focus on improved cloud cost management and tackling the reduction of mounting technical debt. The survey found that 72% of CIOs admit they are behind in their digital transformation because of this technical debt, which is of particular concern as 92% of CIOs are expected to deliver digital transformation initiatives ...

New report shines spotlight on e-mobility innovators unlocking access to the US$3.65bn motorcycle market in sub-Saharan Africa

More than 90% of electric motorcycles sold in sub-Saharan Africa are imported from China and India and are not built for African conditions Electric motorcycles are set to be a dominant force in sub-Saharan Africa’s sustainable mobility transformation, but continued investment in start-ups tackling barriers across the value chain will be critical to maximise the full potential, says a report recently released by the Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) (https://www.PREO.org) programme. Two-wheelers are quicker and more easily manoeuvrable than four-wheeled vehicles, especially across sub-Saharan Africa, where countries often have poor-quality roads. Motorcycles also provide stable income opportunities. The Charging Ahead – Accelerating e-mobility in Africa (https://apo-opa.info...

Will AI replace software developers?

Since its launch in November last year, the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has had a massive impact in just a few short months. Already, some schools have banned it as students quickly employed the bot to take shortcuts in their schoolwork, while debates rage on whether the bot will or won’t replace copywriters. It can also write code – so well, in fact, that when Google fed it a series of coding interview questions, its answers would have qualified it for an entry-level engineering position with annual compensation of USD$183,000. But Saša Slankamenac, Architect at Dariel Software, doesn’t agree with the fears that AI will replace software developers. “In my view, AI is not coming for anyone’s job. These concerns crop up with every major new technology that’s released, and whi...

Five Areas Where AI Can Help Do Better Business, Right Now

By: Jacques Du Bruyn, Managing Director, Flume  While the creative industry loses its collective mind about how ChatGPT, Bard and the ‘smarter’ version of Bing are going to decimate job numbers in the industry and deliver massive volumes of poor-quality work at next to no cost – and there’s plenty to be said about why that panic is misplaced – there are plenty of applications for AI in the creative industry and others that don’t have people quite as upset. Content Production AI is making inroads right now is content creation and production, in terms of developing ideas and producing the content itself.  While AI is able to produce content, as well as to edit, proofread, personalise, optimise and curate – it comes with caveats alongside the time-saving aspects.  Almost every business has...

ChatGPT and Cybersecurity: What AI means for digital security

As AI technology like ChatGPT evolves, so do the strategies and tactics used by cybercriminals. Steve Flynn, Sales and Marketing Director at ESET Southern Africa, says ongoing awareness is crucial in understanding how to manage potential cybersecurity challenges posed by these developing tools. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes a new reality for individuals and businesses, its potential impact on cybersecurity cannot be ignored. OpenAI and its language model, ChatGPT, are no exception and while these tools offer significant benefits to almost every industry, they also present new challenges for digital security. ChatGPT raises concerns due to its natural language processing capabilities, which could be used to create highly personalised and sophisticated cyberattacks. Th...

8.7% of users encountered phishing attacks in Africa in 2022, global number of attacks exceeds 500 million

Kaspersky’s (www.Kaspersky.co.za) anti-phishing system prevented more than 500 million attempts at accessing fraudulent websites globally in 2022. This is twice more compared to 2021 figures. In Africa, 8.7% of individuals and corporate users were affected by phishing: attacks on their devices were detected and stopped. In South Africa, the share of users affected by phishing stands at 9.7%, followed by Kenya at 8.4% and Nigeria at 7%. Detailed information on the global situation with spam and phishing can be found in Kaspersky’s Spam and Phishing in 2022 (https://apo-opa.info/3Zc1idO) report. Although spam and phishing attacks are not necessarily complex from a technological standpoint, they rely on sophisticated social engineering tactics, making them highly dangerous to those who are n...

New outlook on skills development can solve CTO headaches and fast-track coding careers in 2023

By Jessica Hawkey, Managing Director at redAcademy As 2023 begins in full swing, we can all be forgiven for feeling as though we have been on a seemingly endless roller coaster during the past year. However, despite the surprises and shocks, one thing remained consistent throughout 2022 and is predicted to be one of the most pressing challenges in 2023, for C-suites trying to keep up with a rapidly digitizing world: there has been and will continue to be, a chronic IT skills shortage, especially a shortage of work-ready software developers.  Of course, this is a tragedy because alongside the software skills shortage is a crippling unemployment rate, especially among young people, while from a business perspective, C-suites in general, and CTOs in particular, are being hamstrung in fulfil...
